Register for Conference

PHAA Virtual Conference Monday, March 6, 2023

This year’s PHAA virtual conference will take place from 9am to 5pm on Monday March 6. The fee for members of your family to participate in as many Zoom sessions as they wish is:

  • $10 per family if you register by February 28
  • $15 if you register by March 5
  • $20 on the day of the conference.

After you register in this store, you will be sent Zoom links to all of the sessions.

The theme of the conference is “New Horizons in Homeschooling: Exploring Your Options” After the keynote address at 9am, there will be two simultaneous threads as shown below. Most of the sessions will feature  discussion and thus you!

9am: Keynote Address: Helping Our Students Make Decisions for the Future – Don Hill, PHAA Board Member

10am: Making the Transition to High School at Home: have all your questions answered while you gather ideas to figure out your next step –Patricia Richman and panel of mothers including Rachel Hill, PHAA administrator.

11am:  Ins and outs of the PHAA Diploma Program: requirements, examples, a chance to get all your questions answered – Dr. Howard Richman, PHAA executive director.

Noon: Treads in PA Home Education: Including: latest statistical trends in homeschooling in PA, notarized affidavits v. unsworn declarations, umbrella schools and parent responsibility under PA Home School law, and Act 55 of 2022 concerning home school students attending classes at public schools, including career and Tech Ed programs.—Thomas Dubbs, PA Department of Education.

1pm:  Foreign Languages at Home: Is this possible? How to find helpful resources—and the attitudes – that lead to success – Susan Richman and Olivia Grugan.

2pm:  AP Student Panel: How AP Classes can extend your learning horizons – discussion session facilitated by Susan Richman with a panel of students in our Pennsylvania Homeschoolers AP Online classes.

3pm – 4:40pm: Advanced Placement, Honors and Summer Courses from PA Homeschoolers AP Online – presented by Susan Richman and a panel of AP teachers. Learn about the benefits of our AP classes and meet specific teachers. Find out what makes our program unique and energizing!

10am: Excelsior Webzine: creating online and bringing students together virtually – discussion session especially for students led by Editor Edith Mauch and the Excelsior Staff.

11am: I Taught Myself Something New: short 5-minute (or less) videos submitted by students and live discussion panel with students, facilitated by Bonnie Gonzalez. This can *count* for the PHAA public speaking requirement! Could be a hobby, craft, sport, life skill, life ‘lesson’, interpersonal skill, academic endeavor, etc. (Click here to upload your 5 minute video. Click here to watch a video explaining this topic.)

Noon:  Using the Scientific Method for High School Science Fair Projects – Audrey Johnson

1pm: Evaluators Meeting: Helping your evaluees plan their high school years and beyond– Dr. Howard Richman, Audrey Johnson, Bonnie Gonzalez.

2pm:  Handling Life’s Challenges: Inspirational session, by Timothy Anger, who survived an Aortic Dissection last January and shares life lessons learned through crisis.

3pm:  Excellence and Acceptance: A parent/student talk about transition from high school to the work force -- Patti Trettel and Steve Trettel

4pm: PHAA Annual Membership Meeting: elect a Board Member, consider by-laws changes, discuss how our virtual conference and graduation ceremonies went chaired by Dr. Howard Richman, PHAA executive director.
